Sport lead climbing course

Learn to lead sport routes: clipping, falls, dynamic belaying and rope management.

Sport lead climbing course

A course for climbers who have climbed top-rope, indoors or on easy routes and want to start leading sport routes outdoors. The focus is safe clipping, dynamic belaying, rope management and understanding common mistakes before taking real falls.

We work on rope position, efficient clipping, bolt reading, communication with the belayer and progressive falls in a controlled setting. We also review habits often brought from the climbing gym that should be adjusted outdoors: route choice, distance to the bolt, clipping, rope management and belayer reaction.

The goal is to start leading easy sport routes with judgement, without skipping important safety steps. We do not aim to force grades or unnecessary falls, but to build a clear progression so both leader and belayer understand what is happening at each moment.

It can be run as an intensive day or over two days if you want more time to repeat systems, gain confidence and transfer the learning to real routes. We choose sectors with visible bolts, comfortable bases and grades suitable for the group.

FAQ

Do I need previous experience?

Yes. You should know basic belaying and have climbed top-rope, indoors or outdoors before. This is not a course from zero.

Will we practise falls?

Yes, if the level and context allow it. Falls are introduced progressively, with prior explanation and on suitable routes to reduce surprises.

Does the belayer learn too?

Yes. Lead climbing is a two-person system. We work on dynamic belaying, position, attention, communication and rope slack management.
